Heritage Revived

From Maritime Pioneer to Historic Villa Revival

Petar Jakov LEVA (Veli Lošinj 1799 – Veli Lošinj 1879) is one of the most famous captains from Lošinj because he was the first commander from the eastern Adriatic to sail around Cape Horn, in 1834 on the brig “Ferdinando V Re D’Ungheria” for the Austrian Lloyd. He was also the first sailor of the Austrian Empire to initiate trade relations between Trieste and Chile. He was also called the most elegant captain of Lošinj because he was very handsome, tall and slender. In the company of his beautiful wife, they were considered the most beautiful naval couple in Lošinj in the mid-19th century. Due to the maritime, commercial and military merits of this family, the eastern cape of the entrance to the port of Veli Lošinj, where the port light is located, is named Punta Leva in its honor.

During the East German (DDR) period, Villa Leva in Veli Lošinj was known as a climatic health resort specializing in children with respiratory problems, especially for children from East Germany (DDR).

In the summer of 2024, it opened it`s doors again to anyone who wants to stay in this historic villa, under the name Captain`s Villa.
